“Migration” was the word prompt for this International Society of Type Designers membership piece. I chose to create a curated anthology documenting the abandonment of the once booming Tri-State Lead and Zinc district, home of the infamous lead and zinc mining town of Picher, OK. This book documents the effects lead and zinc mining had on the area between the 1910s to today through snippets of news articles and personal accounts typeset as prose. The imagery and typography are parsed from local newspapers from each era. The red monochrome image treatment references the heavy metals that contaminated the water in Tar Creek turning it bright red-orange. As each decade passes, the layout grows more minimal, alluding to the gradual migration away from Picher which eventually left it ghost town.
